DO I NEED A DOCTOR’S REFERRAL?
Vermont is a Direct Access state, so if you have a commercial insurance you can be evaluated without a doctor's referral. With your permission or request, I will forward your PT evaluation to your PCP or physician of your choice. However, Medicare, Medicaid, Auto, and Worker's Comp will require a doctor's referral.
WHAT TYPES OF HEALTH INSURANCE DO YOU ACCEPT?
Dorset Physio is credentialed with these insurance companies to provided In-Network Coverage: BCBS of VT, UCH/Optum, Cigna/Ash, MVP, Medicare, Tricare, and VT Medicaid. We also take Worker's Comp and Auto, please reach outto us for any questions on coverage and we are happy to help!
We are Out of Network with other insurance companies, but we are are happy to help you submit your claim. We also offer Cash-Based services if you do not have out of network benefits. Be sure you contact your personal insurance company to learn more about your benefits for Physical Therapy as it is the patient's responsibility to know your coverage, not your PT provider.
ARE YOU ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS?
Yes. Dorset Physio offers new patient visits every week, and will find a time to suit your needs. We strive to be able to see you within 1-2 weeks, but due to COVID regulations appointment times may be limited for proper spacing and time allocated for cleaning.
WHAT DO I BRING TO MY FIRST VISIT?
Be sure to arrive 15 minutes early to complete all paperwork. Be sure to bring your Photo ID, Insurance Cards, Medication List, and Reading Glasses if you need them. Wear loose, comfortable clothing you can exercise in, and sneakers are preferred.
ANNUAL PT EXAM
SCHEDULE AN ANNUAL PHYSICAL THERAPY CHECK UP AND TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH!
As we all know, regular check-ups with our physician and dentist are extremely important if we want to be as healthy as possible. However, most people overlook another type of check-up that is also extremely important…… the Physical Therapy Annual Check-Up. We recommend adding a trip to your physical therapist to your annual healthcare rounds this year to:
Decrease your risk of injury,
Improve your overall health,
Live an active life,
Decrease daily aches and pains, and
Just feel good as you go through your daily routine.
Do you have some aches and pain that keep you from doing everything you want or need to be doing? Are you taking over-the- counter medication, or stronger prescription drugs, just to get through your daily routine? Maybe you need a Physical Therapy Check-Up to check your Movement System.
WHY A PT CHECK UP?
Physical Therapists are specifically trained to examine and treat the musculoskeletal system, our “movement system”, without drugs or surgery. Our musculoskeletal system is made up of muscles, bones, joints, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and the nerves that go to them – this is how we move and how we function.
An annual PT ‘checkup’ will help you learn how to keep these essential parts of your body working together to support and move your body. Whether you’re an elite athlete, a couch potato, or just getting started with an exercise program, this check-up will help you understand how you move, and what problems may cause pain or lead to an injury. Based on the results of your check-up, your PT can teach you a program to help you move better and decrease your chance of an expensive or life-changing injury.
HOW IS THIS A GREAT ADDITION TO MY ANNUAL PHYSICAL?
When you see your medical doctor for your annual check-up, a check list of tests is followed to keep track of your health. For example, they take your blood pressure, listen to your heart and lungs, check your oxygen level, and collect blood and urine samples – looking for health problems like high cholesterol or diabetes. The information collected can be compared from year to year so your MD can address problems when they are small. In addition, during your physical therapy check-up, your PT will take measurements and compare your ability to move from year to year, so that they can find muscle, joint and overall movement problems when they are small and much easier to solve.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY ANNUAL PT CHECK UP?
During your Annual Physical Therapy Check-up at Dorset Physio, your physical therapist will review your medical history and perform a series of tests to check your strength and your ability to coordinate and move your body, from head to toe.
Your strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and overall function will be tracked from year to year. Just like your physician, your physical therapist will pay special attention to any problems or concerns you are having. Often, patients have small complaints which can be easily solved with a bit of advice and home exercises recommended by your physical therapist at the check-up!
With the help of your physical therapist, you can move better, feel better, save money, and prevent injuries!

LSVT BIG & BIG FOR LIFE PROGRAM
WHAT IS LSVT BIG AND BIG FOR LIFE?
LSVT BIG is a research-based exercise program developed from the principles of the LSVT LOUD program. The LSVT BIG program has been developed specifically for patients with Parkinson’s Disease. With over 20 years of research, the program has shown documented improvements of faster walking and bigger steps, improved balance, and increased trunk rotation.
HOW DOES THE LSVT BIG PROGRAM WORK?
The LSVT BIG program drives high-intensity and high-effort practice in order to teach the amount of effort required to produce normal movements. The exercises translate into bigger movements in everyday activities.
HOW LONG DOES THE LSVT BIG PROGRAM LAST?
The LSVT BIG program consists of 16 sessions. Patients attend four sessions per week for four weeks. Each session lasts 1 hour. Patients are also expected to do daily homework.
WHEN IS THE LSVT BIG PROGRAM APPROPRIATE?
Patients with Parkinson’s Disease can participate in the LSVT BIG program at any time during their disease process. However, research suggests that the earlier a patient gets into the program, the more beneficial it can be. The exercise program can be modified to accommodate patients at different levels of mobility.
WHAT TYPE OF EXERCISES WIL I BE DOING?
The LSVT BIG program consists of seven maximal daily exercises, five functional tasks, and one-to-three hierarchy tasks. The maximal daily exercises are standard exercises that all patients perform. There are two seated and five standing exercises. These exercises focus on sustained posture, trunk rotation, balance, and stepping. The five functional tasks are made custom to the patient’s needs. These are one step tasks, such as sit-to-stand, turning, backwards stepping, etc. The hierarchy tasks are also custom to the patient’s needs. These are more complex tasks, such as getting on-and-off the floor, getting in-and-out of bed, getting in-and-out of the car, etc.
HOW WILL THE LSVT BIG PROGRAM BE CUSTOMIZED TO FIT MY NEEDS?
The LSVT BIG program is custom made for each patient, dependent on the patient’s needs and goals. During the evaluation, the therapist will perform numerous standardized tests to determine the patient’s limitations. The therapist will also discuss in detail with the patient the challenges they are having and their specific goals. The program is then tailored to fit the patient’s deficits and goals through different functional and hierarchy tasks. The standard maximal daily exercises can be modified to be made easier or more difficult, based upon the patient’s level of function.
HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH LSVT BIG?
To get started with the LSVT BIG program, you first need a prescription for the program from your doctor. This may come from your primary care physician or your neurologist. Then contact a facility that has LSVT BIG trained therapists. You can search for an LSVT Certified Clinician near you on the LSVT Global website.
WHAT IS LSVT BIG FOR LIFE?
This is a maintenance program offered only my LSVT BIG for LIFE Clinicians after you have completed the LSVT BIG program. Dorset Physio Offers this program 1x week for 1 hour group class held at the Manchester Gym through their group class punch card system.
